// Who I am

Built by Neil Shankar Ray.

Applied linguist, AI engineer, NLP researcher. 14 years teaching English across reputed Indian schools — to L1-Bangla, Hindi, and Marathi students. MA in English from a Central University. Currently enrolled at IIT Patna for a PhD in Computational Linguistics and a Certification in AI/ML, alongside an early Diploma in Software Engineering from NIIT.

Three lenses on the same problem: making language and intelligence work together.

01

The classroom

Fourteen years correcting the same L1-interference patterns by hand. The instincts that show up in Vaaani's Socratic prompts — pointing to the line, asking before telling, anchoring in the text — came from those classrooms, not from a paper.

02

The linguistics

An MA in English and an ongoing PhD in Computational Linguistics at IIT Patna. The graph layer in Vaaani treats every text the way a linguist would: as a structure of entities, relations, and themes — not a bag of tokens.

03

The engineering

NIIT Diploma in Software Engineering followed by a Certification in AI/ML at IIT Patna. The stack — TurboVec, sentence-transformers, FastAPI, a large language model, networkx — is what an indie builder ships when they want a product to actually work, not just to demo.

I built Vaaani because the AI tutors I saw were optimising for the wrong thing — speed of answer, not depth of understanding. A good teacher knows when to withhold the answer. That's what Socratic mode does.
